Video Game Movies Are Back, Part One (see the second story here)... With Sonic the Hedgehog's sequel still running rings around the box office, studios are looking to other video game properties again. SEGA is hoping that having John Wick writer Derek Kolstad's script for Streets Of Rage might tempt someone to nab it.
Yes, never happier than when he's writing about people righting each other, Kolstad penned a Streets screenplay on spec.
Streets Of Rage, developed and published by SEGA, first launched in 1991 via the Megadrive home video game console. The side-scroller follows former police offers who battle a crime syndicate. Since the debut game, the franchise has spawned sequels across numerous gaming platforms including the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. The latest title, Streets Of Rage 4, was released in April 2020 and has sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide.
Sonic producer dj2 Entertainment and Escape Artists will produce the film adaptation, which will now battle out in an increasingly crowded marketplace for studio attention.
