If there was anyone who was going to finally knock the Avengers from the top spot at the US box office, it was John Wick, who could probably have taken down Thanos without all the complicated hassle. And so it has proved, with John Wick: Chapter Three – Parabellum has launched in first place with $57 million this weekend, according to studio estimates.

That's the best start for a Wick film to date, and it has already earned more in one weekend than the original film took in total in the States. Avengers: Endgame, meanwhile, was nudged down to second place, yet it still took in $29.4 million. Domestically, the movie has now made $770 million, passing Avatar in that regard, though it has a little way to go to best it worldwide, moving the needle to $2.5 billion in its fourth weekend (Avatar still sits at $2.7 billion).

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu earned $24.8 million in third place, pushing past $94 million in the US. A Dog's Journey, the sequel to 2017's A Dog's Purpose, opened to $8 million in fourth, representing about $10 million less than the original. It'll have to hope for an international boost much like Purpose got from China.

Fifth was con comedy The Hustle, adding $6 million, while The Intruder fell two places to sixth with $4 million. Long Shot earned $3.4 million, slipping to seventh. Romantic YA adaptation The Sun Is Also A Star opened to $2.6 million at eighth, while cheerleading comedy Poms was pushed to ninth on $2 million. Finally, Uglydolls found itself 10th, taking in $1.6 million. The 'toon has barely cracked $17 million in the States and seems unlikely to spawn the hoped-for franchise.
