As part of the company's Blumfest event, the Blumhouse team made several announcements, including the fact that John Ridley will write and direct a poltergeist film.
Not a remake of the 1982 film (that already happened to less-than-successful effect in 2015), this is actually a based on a real-world event, chronicled in a piece called Project Poltergeist written by Saleah Blancaflor for the Truly Adventurous site. It chronicles a young boy's terrifying encounter with supernatural entities in a public housing project in New Jersey.
"This is an incredible true-life narrative of a young man dealing with horrors - both paranormal and racially systemic - in a community that is scarred by hate, yet ultimately brought together by hope. I really appreciate Blumhouse’s commitment to telling stories that seek to entertain audiences even as it challenges them,” said Ridley.
The director most recently worked on sci-fi tale Needle In A Timestack, and short Certified Black Genius.
