Because there are still, apparently, Stephen King stories left to adapt, Netflix is throwing a film based on Mr. Harrigan's Phone into development, with John Lee Hancock attached to write and direct.
A powerhouse producing combo of Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum's Blumhouse team is on board to oversee the movie. The story, which appears in the collection If It Bleeds, which hit bookshelves earlier this year, follows a young boy who befriends an older billionaire who lives in his small-town neighborhood. They bond over the man’s first iPhone. But when the man dies, the boy discovers that not everything dead is gone and finds himself able to communicate with his friend from the grave by leaving voicemails on the iPhone that was buried with him. And here we can barely get a signal in our flat.
Netflix is developing something of a King habit (but then so has most of Hollywood), with this marking the fourth adaptation for the streaming service. As for Blumhouse, the company is also looking to shoot a new take on his classic Firestarter yarn.
