Having successfully made the transition from wrestling to acting via action films and comedy, John Cena is now the target of various movies. And he's under serious consideration to join the expanding cast for The Suicide Squad.
According to Variety, Cena's in talks to star alongside the returning Margot Robbie, Viola Davis and Jai Courtney, plus fellow new arrival Idris Elba for writer/director James Gunn. The latter is walking an interesting tightrope with this one, as the film serves as a follow-up to 2016's Suicide Squad while also reboots the idea in ways that Warner Bros. is hoping lands more successfully with fans. Suicide Squad, let's not forget, suffered from mixed-to-negative reviews, but still made more than $746 million worldwide, and won an Oscar.
Little is know about Gunn's take on the material, but he's looking to kick off shooting this autumn ahead of an August 6, 2021 release. As for Cena, he'll be seen in Jackie Chan action pic Project X-Traction (which has yet to lock in a release date here), plus comedy Plying With Fire and provides a voice for The Voyage Of Doctor Dolittle, which has been undergoing some reshoots but is still aiming to arrive next January.
