John C. Reilly is joining Tilda Swinton in Lynne Ramsay's first film for eight years, We Need To Talk About Kevin.

Ramsay has not directed a film since 2002's Movern Callar, but was considering adapting The Lovely Bones for a while, only to get cold feet about the project and leave it for Peter Jackson to pick up. But she's now back with another tale of parental pain and child issues.

Lionel Shriver's 2003 novel follows Eva Khatchadourian (Swinton) and her attempts to come to terms with her son, who went on a killing spree in his local school. The book's story is formed from letters written by Eva to her estranged husband Franklin and we track the family's slow disintegration.

With Reilly playing Franklin, and several distribution deals in place, Ramsay aims to start shooting in the spring.
