Robert Rodriguez’ latest Spy Kids adventure – which, despite its titular number 4 will also reboot the series – has just landed a star that should make it at least 73% funnier, with The Informant’s Joel McHale agreeing to one of the lead roles.
McHale will be playing a spy-tracking reporter married to Jessica Alba (lucky blighter), who is the stepmother to his kids and also happens to be a retired Secret Agent herself. Suffice to say she doesn’t stay off duty for long, as Alba told Empire recently that she’s getting plenty of stunts in the movie.
You might know Joel McHale from US network E!’s comedy show The Soup, but these days he’s also been starring on superb sitcom Community. Film-wise, he spent his summer shooting What’s Your Number with Anna Faris and Steve Martin’s The Big Year.
There’s no word yet on who will be playing the new generation of child agents, though we’re guessing it'll be either newcomers or members of Rodriguez’ own family. Given the loyalty that the man inspires, expect cameos from the original Spy Kids cast, with Antonio Banderas already on record as saying he's happy to show up.
The movie’s in pre-production now, and Rodriguez aims to have it in cinemas by next August.
