Joel Edgerton proved he had what it takes as a director with 2015's The Gift and we've been waiting to see what he'd follow that up with. Now we have an answer, as companies are competing to take on his next film, Erased Boy.

Edgerton has adapted Gerrard Conley's eponymous memoir for the new film. Manchester By The Sea's Lucas Hedges is set to star as a character based on Conley, who came out to his parents at the age of 19. His strict Baptist pastor father gave him a choice: attend Love In Action, a church-backed "conversion therapy" program claiming to "cure" homosexuality, or lose his family, his friends and his religion. Despite the pressure from those around him, Conley emerged more determined than ever to be true to himself.

Edgerton will once more step before the cameras in one of his films to play the man who runs the program. And if he has his way, he will also have two heavyweights in the cast – Deadline reports that he's offered Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman the roles of the main character's parents. All being well, Edgerton will start shooting this autumn.
