Jennifer Lawrence and regular Hunger Games sequels director Francis Lawrence are teaming back up for an adaptation of espionage thriller novel Red Sparrow. And with that all still in the works, now Joel Edgerton might be joining the duo.

Jason Matthews' 2014 tome is set in modern-day Russia and would see Lawerence playing Dominika Egorova, an intelligence officer who must survive in the tough bureaucracy of the post-Soviet Russian spy machine. She's pressed into service as a "sparrow", a train seductress, and is sent to target Nathanial Nash (Edgerton, if he takes the role), a young CIA officer who has been assigned to investigate the Russian intelligence system.

Naturally, their encounters are charged with attraction and sexual energy and soon their relationship is putting both of them at risk. Things take another turn when she's recruited by the CIA to root out a high-level traitor in Washington. It could be a solid pairing for the actors, and has a script from Justin Haythe, who himself re-wrote a draft by American Hustle's Eric Warren Singer.

Edgerton will be back on our screens in Loving, which will be out on February 3 next year.
