Paul Schrader is on a real run of films of late, with First Reformed winning plenty of praise and his latest, The Card Counter, premiering at the Venice Film Festival. The writer/director is already setting up his next film, Master Gardener, and has Joel Edgerton and Sigourney Weaver lined up to star.

Master Gardener is the story of a meticulous horticulturist (Edgerton) who is devoted to tending the grounds of a beautiful estate and pandering to his employer, the wealthy dowager (Weaver). When she demands that he take on her wayward and troubled great niece, it unlocks dark secrets from a buried violent past.

“When the idea first started it was one of my male protagonists but then these two women intervened and it became something more complex and unique,” Schrader tells Deadline.

The Card Counter, meanwhile, will premiere tomorrow in Venice and arrives in the UK on 5 November. You can find the trailer here.
