Last week we told you that Len Wiseman had signed on to direct the high-concept, big-budget sci-fi war movie, Atlantis Rising, for DreamWorks – and now the project is gathering speed, with news that Joby Harold has signed on to write the screenplay.
Harold will be adapting the script from the five-part Platinum Studios comic book, which sees the lost civilisation of Atlantis declare all-out war on mankind. DreamWorks, which may share the budget and distribution duties with Paramount, aims to have the movie in cinemas by the summer of 2011. And yes, it’s a tentpole. A great, big, Aliens-style tentpole.
Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are producing the movie, along with Mitchell Rosenberg. "In all the classic versions of this kind of movie, the threat is always from the stars," Orci told The Hollywood Reporter. "The idea that it's somehow our cousins who went off in a different path of evolution who have been here, literally, underneath our oceans… That's fascinating."
Well, it is a good premise for a movie, we’ll grant that, but there’s a long way to go yet before **Atlantis Rising **will make a big splash. We’ll keep an eye on this one.
