While we do have some confirmed news tidbits about Warner Bros.’ big planned Batman / Superman film, what we know in terms of casting – Cavill, Affleck, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman – is far outweighed by the rumours floating about. Add one more to the “possible” pile, as Variety reports that Joaquin Phoenix is being seriously considered for a role in the movie.
Though it’s still unclear which part he could end up in, current speculation points to Lex Luthor, the iconic Superman baddie whose name has been linked with the likes of Bryan Cranston in the past.
Of course, given that it’s very early days on the overtures and the fact that Phoenix doesn’t exactly make a habit of cropping up in blockbuster fare these days, any discussion of character is moot until he actually signs a contract.
Still, given the positive attention he’s been getting for Spike Jonze’s techno-romance Her and his current popularity, it makes sense the studio might want him. For what it's worth, we'd love to see Phoenix tackle a comic-book villain to see what he'd bring to the role: his last real bad guy was in Gladiator and he's one of the few stars in Hollywood not to have dabbled in the superhero genre.
