Woody Allen is pulling his latest project, Magic In The Moonlight, across the finishing line ready for a release in a couple of months. Yet the ever-busy filmmaker is already looking ahead to his next directorial outing, and has begun to gather the cast for the untitled film, with Joaquin Phoenix the first to sign a deal.
So far, Phoenix’s presence at the head of the cast is all the information we have about the film, with the famously secretive Allen keeping such useful titbits such as title, location, synopsis and anything else well and truly under wraps. He’s even better than J.J. Abrams at this particular game.
What the actor and anyone else who joins him at Camp Allen will be up to is anyone’s guess at this point. Perhaps Woody’s decided to surprise everyone and is stealthily working up a Doctor Strange adventure for Marvel? Yeah, it’s about as likely as Michael Bay agreeing to make a Blumhouse film with no special effects, no explosions and no girls in bikinis, but it’s certainly fun to speculate about. All we know with any degree of accuracy is that Allen is set to kick off work in July.
As for Magic In The Moonlight, the comedy drama finds Emma Stone, Colin Firth, Marcia Gay Harden, Hamish Linklater and Jacki Weaver wrapped up in the story of an Englishman brought in to help unmask a possible swindle in 1920s France, with many romantic and professional complications. It has a US release date set for July 25.
