While no date has been set for Matt Murdock's return to our screens, Marvel/Netflix's Daredevil has been tracking down someone new to add to the cast. According to Deadline, Joanne Whalley is the latest recruit.
"We are big fans of Joanne’s work and are fortunate that someone of her caliber will be joining our already talented family," says Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb tells the site. “Joanne is a rare talent and a terrific creative collaborator. Watching her bring her role to life has the writers all pinching ourselves," adds current showrunner Erik Oleson. He carefully doesn't mention who she's playing, but Netflix has now confirmed that she'ss playing Sister Maggie. Which fits with a line from the end of The Defenders, where – spoiler alert should you have not reached that part due to timing or Iron Fist-based frustration – a badly injured Matt is lying in hospital and someone calls for "Maggie". Sister Maggie was first created for the Frank Miller-crafted Born Again comics, but there's no specific news yet on whether she'll stay true to her comic book roots, and be revealed as Matt's mother, Margaret Grace Murdock, who left the family when he was young to become a nun. Either way, it certainly sounds like a role for Whalley to get her teeth into.
She'll join returning show veterans Charloe Cox, Deborah Ann Woll and
Elden Henson, and a bigger part for Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk this time around, which is a welcome sign.
