The role of Commissioner James Gordon in Batman is one that has been played so many times, when a new one is announced we almost expect a ceremony like finding a new Pope. But instead of some white smoke from the Vatican, the Bat Signal is shining in the sky above Gotham to announce that Zack Snyder has cast J.K. Simmons as Gordon in the Justice League films.

Simmons, who won an Oscar last year, isn't exactly a stranger to comic book films, having provided what many consider the best portrayal of Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies. And you can see why Snyder went for someone with gravitas to play Gordon in Justice League; this will be a Commissioner existing in a world where Batman has been active (and then essentially retired, only to return in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice) for years.

Justice League – Part 1 is scheduled to start shooting next month, and brings together Bats (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) to battle a threat so powerful they can't deal with it alone. The first film will be out on November 17, 2017, with the second following on June 14, 2019. Before all that, though, there's still Dawn Of Justice to come on March 25.
