Earlier this month** 300: Rise Of An Empire**’s Sullivan Stapleton signed up for The Lake**, a new action thriller that bears the producing stamp from Luc Besson. The ensemble around him is beginning to fill out, with J.K. Simmons, Charlie Bewley and Diarmaid Murtagh reporting for duty.
Into The Storm’s Steven Quale is handling the shot-calling for this one, which finds a group of Navy SEALs who discover a mysterious trove of treasure hidden in a lake in war-torn Serbia. Their quest becomes to find out who left it there and what its ultimate purpose might be. Naturally, that will lead to bullets flying and plenty of tough scrapes. It’s a Besson production: you were expecting quiet debate about war crimes?
Simmons, who recently scored an Oscar for his performance in Whiplash, has several films due out this year, including Terminator Genisys (July 3), Worlds Apart and Rock Dog. He’ll also be seen alongside Ben Affleck in The Accountant next year and heads for dangerous climes in Kong: Skull Island in 2017. Bewley, a veteran of** The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn**, is shooting a new drama called The Broken Ones, while Murtagh appeared in Dracula Untold. The Lake, meanwhile, will hit US screens on July 15 next year, but has yet to announce a UK date.
