Despite having the small matter of writing and directing Star Wars: Episode IX on his plate, the ever-prolific J.J. Abrams has a new project in the works on the small screen. But this is no mere executive producer credit situation - Abrams is creating his first TV series since Fringe, and has penned the script himself.

The show is currently unnamed, but is pitched as a family-driven sci-fi drama. According to The Hollywood Reporter{ =nofollow}, Abrams’ script follows a mother, father, and daughter who get into a car crash which leaves the mother, a scientist, in a coma. The daughter finds herself in a strange new world facing a ‘monstrous, oppressive force’ after rooting through her mother’s experiments.

Based on Abrams’ previous TV dramas as a lead creator - Fringe, Lost, Alias and Felicity - it sounds like this could be another mystery-fuelled head-scratcher from the Bad Robot stable.

The series is being shopped around networks at the moment, with Apple, Warner, and HBO said to be interested - the latter could be an especially interesting fit, with Abrams currently serving as an Executive Producer on Westworld. Elsewhere, Abrams is producing Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek movie idea, and has the unenviable responsibility of cooking up a satisfying final chapter in the latest Star Wars trilogy.
