Recently Jennifer Lopez has limited her cinematic work to frothy rom-coms such as The Back–Up Plan and** What To Expect When You’re Expecting** and her action-adjacent role in Parker. For her next film, she’s going for some more serious drama, signing on to co-star with Antonio Banderas in true-life Chilean miner pic **The 33{ =nofollow}.

Martin Sheen and Rodrigo Santoro are also aboard the movie, which finds Patricia Riggen directing from a script by Mikko Alanne and Jose Rivera.

**The 33 **will follow the tense 69 days in 2010 during which 33 miners were trapped following a collapse at the San Jose Mine. Among those stuck underground were Mario Sepulveda, who became known as “Super Mario” thanks to his efforts to help his fellow workers and his charismatic attitude. Banderas is on to play him, with Santoro as one of the other miners. Sheen will play a father desperately waiting for news of his trapped son. There’s no official word on which character Lopez will play, but she’ll either be a family member stuck in limbo as the drama develops or part of the team trying to help those in the mine.

Riggen aims to have the cameras rolling this autumn in Chile.
