Two of the hottest stars in Hollywood are teaming up for a sci-fi romance in the stars. Passengers, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, has all the makings of being a galactic hit, and the first trailer has now arrived.

There’s a dash of Gravity, a dollop of Interstellar, even a sprinkle of Starman and a wee pinch of When Harry Met Sally in this one, judging by the trailer, which sees Lawrence and Pratt play two passengers in a futuristic cruise spaceship, awoken 90 years early from hibernation during an 120-year voyage to a distant colony planet.

Alone and with nothing to do, they join the mile-high club (or should that be lightyear-high club?), accompanied only by Michael Sheen’s robot barman. Naturally, this being space, nothing quite goes to plan, and the couple must confront a new relationship and a malfunctioning spaceship.

The Imitation Game’s Morten Tyldum is directing this one, from a long-admired script by Jon Spaihts which was included in 2007’s Black List, the annual ranking of the best unmade scripts in Hollywood.

Fortunately, we don’t have a 120-year wait on our hands to see the end result: Passengers arrives in cinemas on 23 December, 2016.
