Though it has been shoved back schedule-wise by script issues and other delays, the fifth Pirates Of The Caribbean film – officially known as Dead Men Tell No Tales – was always going to happen. Now it’s finally in production, with Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow, with Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites the obligatory younger, good looking pair, Javier Bardem confirmed as the baddie and Exodus: Gods And Kings' Golshifteh Farahani as the most recent recruit.
Kon-Tiki directing pair Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning is at the helm for this one, which, thanks to Disney’s announcement about the start of production, has released a proper storyline at last. Vocal chords contorted into voice-over mode and here we go… “Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Capt. Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea… including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.” So… yes, Sparrow once more on a quest for a mystical McGuffin and facing off against yet another pirate opponent. If it ain’t broke… Our biggest hope at this point is that Bardem will add another character to his Mad Hair Club.
With Geoffrey rush back as Barbossa with Kevin McNally as Gibbs and Stephen Graham as Scrum, Jeff Nathan provided the script for this one, and Sandberg and Rønning are cranking the cameras now in Australia, readying things for a July 7, 2017 release date.
