So much for Suicide Squad 2... A little over two weeks ago, word emerged that The Shallows' Jaume Collet-Serra was the front-runner to direct the DCEU bad-guys-on-a-mission-movie sequel. All that has now changed, as the filmmaker is now attached to guide Dwayne Johnson in the Disney theme park ride adaptation Jungle Cruise.
According to Deadline, Collet-Serra has turned down the offer to make the superhero sequel in favour of working with the Rock to kickstart a new franchise, one looking to channel the Indiana Jones vibe for an action adventure plot.
Not much is known about the actual story; though one assumes that J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, who wrote the most recent draft of the script, will be sending Johnson on a ride fraught with danger and exotic creatures. The cameras should be rolling early next year.
The Jungle Cruise idea has been floating around for a while – at one point, Tom Hanks and Tim Allen were considering it. Collet-Serra, meanwhile, next has his latest Liam Neeson collaboration, The Commuter, due out on 19 January.
