It's devastating news, we know. Try not to cry into your coffee. But the sequel to the 2009 Marcus Nispel Friday the 13th remake is dead in the water, like a big-breasted naked teenager with a machete in her back.
Platinum Dunes' producer Brad Fuller confirmed the shock news via a Twitter response to a fan: "It is dead. Not happening." Bloody Disgusting elicited a further, "Right now there is no movement". Well, Jason always was kind of slow.
The film had been talked up as due this summer, with mention here and there of 3D, and hints of exciting new scenarios. Like snow. But there were clues all along that the project was ailing, not least when Fuller all but apologised for the previous instalment.
That film took a pretty respectable $40m in its opening weekend though, and with the invincible hockey-masked killer lumbering through twelve films to date, it's hard to imagine we've seen the last of him. We imagine all Platinum Dunes' number-crunchers will be eyeing the performance of a certain Freddy Krueger. If Nightmare on Elm Street kills, there may be life in Jason yet.
