He’s been busy acting alongside a parade of Muppets (no, we don’t mean Russell Brand for once) but now it would appear that Jason Segel is joining the police force. In the 1980s. Why? Because DreamWorks is looking to put together a new comedy called Undercover Cop, and Segel is their man.
The studio is working with Steven Zaillian’s production company Film Rites, though he’s not likely working on the script, seeing as he’s a little bit in demand elsewhere. Nope, Jason Micallef, who last worked on the upcoming Jennifer Garner/Olivia Wilde/Hugh Jackman comedy Butter, is behind the keyboard for this one.
As for the plot, well, that’s largely being held tight to DreamWorks’ chest right now, though the Risky Business blog did dig up that it’s been inspired by the true story of an ex-cop who managed to penetrate the New Jersey criminal underworld in the 80s. So maybe think The Sopranos meets Even Bigger Hair Than Carmela.
In addition to the Muppet movie, Segel has the Duplass brothers’ Jeff Who Lives at Home and edu-com Bad Teacher due to arrive this year and is busy developing Five-Year Engagement with regular writing partner Nicholas Stoller in between appearing on sitcom How I Met Your Mother.
