It’s a good time to be a James Wan fan. Not only does the director have a brand new original horror movie,Malignant, hitting cinemas this week – but he’s also currently hard at work shooting Aquaman follow-up Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom in the UK right now. It’s Wan’s second outing with DC’s subaquatic superhero, and for the sequel he’s bringing a new look to the character. Last time around, he managed to create a costume for Arthur Curry that channelled the classic comic book orange and green eyesore in a way that actually worked on the big screen – and now, he’s going to have a second look to add to his undersea wardrobe. Take a look here, courtesy of Jason Momoa’s Instagram (scroll over to the second pic).
If the cool blues and icy greys seem like they’d offer a much more camouflaged look below water, that’s the whole point – this one is Aquaman’s “stealth suit”. According to Wan, who also shared the pic on his Instagram page, it uses “Atlantean technology based on cephalopod’s camouflaging ability”. For those who haven’t binged all of Blue Planet II, that suggests we might see some colour-changing magic and snazzy pulsing bioluminescent effects on this one, in true octopus / cuttlefish style. Wan added that he and writer David Leslie Johnson “were inspired by the ‘80s ‘blue suit’” from the comics for the stealth look. And if you were a fan of the orange-gold get-up, fear not – it seems that’ll be back too.
Not much is known about Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom yet – but the film brings back all the core cast from the previous outing, including Amber Heard’s Mera, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta, Patrick Wilson’s King Orm, Temuera Morrison’s Tom Curry, Dolph Lundgren’s King Nereus. Plus Game Of Thrones' Pilou Asbæk has joined the cast, rumoured to be an incoming villain. The film is expected to make waves in cinemas in December 2022.
