It’s been one of the least well-kept secrets around in recent months, but now that Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that Jason Momoa is set to play Aquaman, the actor himself is finally able to talk about the role. And he did just that this weekend at Atlanta’s Walker Stalker convention event, according to Comicbook.com.
Momoa is happy that the catfish is out of the bag, because, if we’re all honest, he wasn’t always subtle about hinting at the casting decision. “Listen, I was asked to play it. You know, you audition and stuff like that, but the fact is you’ve just got to keep it quiet. I was just trying to respect Warner Bros. and everyone’s wishes. I’m really, really happy that I don’t have to be quiet anymore, because that’s really hard for me.”
Though he studied marine biology before starting acting, Momoa won’t be using his education to help prepare for the role. But he will be using his Polynesian heritage. “My family are some of the greatest water men on earth," he said. "I’m not, but I’m going to go train with them. But it’s really an honour just being a Polynesian. And water is the most important thing in this world and we all know it. It’s cool to be a part of DC’s universe. I’m really excited to be with Warner Bros. and hopefully everyone likes it. And Zack Snyder’s a genius, so I’m really excited to be hanging out with him.”
As for when he might first show up as the character – there has been speculation he’ll cameo in **B****atman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice – **it appears Momoa is thinking he’ll debut in the first Justice League film before the solo Aquaman adventure in 2018. “I know the Justice League will come first. That’s really what we’re going to focus on. I’m not sure if it will be set prior to Justice League or post. I don’t know too much about it. It will probably be where he came from.” Naturally, he can’t say too much more, but it must be a relief to finally have the chance to say something... Whether or not Aquaman shows his face, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is set for March 25, 2016.
