There have been all kinds of additions to the Fast & Furious family over time – many of them starting their respective films as villains, only to become part of Dom Toretto’s familia by the final reel. And the latest actor to crack open a bottle of Corona looks set to be a real fish-out-of-water addition to the gang. Early reports have it that the latest antagonist in the franchise will be played by none other than Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Momoa is in ‘final negotiations’ to cause vehicular havoc for our favourite car-based world-saving squad – though Universal is, for now, not commenting on his casting, let alone whether he’ll be opposing Toretto’s team or bolstering them. (Going by most of the previous Fast films, he’ll eventually do both.) Momoa recently wrapped on Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, theoretically freeing him up to join the Fast 10 shoot which is expected to begin in the coming months. It’s already confirmed that director Justin Lin (previously behind Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, Fast 6*, and F9: The Fast Saga) will be on directing duties, with fellow cast members Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, and fan-favourite Sung Kang all expected to return – along with Charlize Theron as uber-villain Cipher.
Most likely not returning is Dwayne Johnson – in recent months, the Vin Diesel / Rock beef has been revved up once more, with some very public displays of passive-aggressive brotherhood and bemused counter-statements. But with his charisma and hulking frame, Momoa is very much in the Fast mould of action heroes – and since John Cena’s Jakob Toretto turned good by the end credits of F9 (of course he did!) he might also be filling the muscle-quotient here on Team Toretto. The other thing to note about Fast 10 is that it’s set to be an epic two-parter in the Infinity War / Endgame mould – let’s see if those ambitious plans can stick the landing when tires meet tarmac. Fast 10 – or, possibly, Fast 10: Part One – is due to arrive in cinemas in May 2023.
