Having braved development hurdles such as swapping out its original star (Tom Hardy) and director (Takeshi Miike), The Outsider, which has Jared Leto in the lead, now finds itself headed into online territory as it becomes one of the several hundred (okay 70 or so) movies Netflix will premiere this year. The trailer has now arrived...
Set in post-World War II Japan, The Outsider chronicles what happens when an imprisoned American soldier (Leto) is freed with the help of his cellmate, who is part of the Yakuza. Seeking to repay the debt, he finds himself sinking ever deeper into the murky, dangerous criminal underworld. Naturally, this finds him shifting allegiances and in one dramatic moment, turning the tables on his foes unexpectedly. There's also a lot of thematic talk about fish and currents.
Martin Zandvliet directed the final incarnation of the film, with Andrew Baldwin writing a script based on John Linson's original idea. Tadanobu Asano, Shioli Kutsuna, Emile Hirsch and Rory Cochrane also feature, and the film hits Netflix on 9 March.
