News of remakes usually tend to provoke negative reactions online, though sometimes the presence of quality talent involved can help mitigate that. We're expecting a mixed response, then, to word that James McAvoy and Claire Foy are on to star in a remake of French thriller My Son.

Christian Carion, who directed the successful 2017 original, is back behind the camera for the new version, which will follow a similar template. McAvoy will play a man desperately searching for his son, and travels to the town where his ex-wife (Foy) lives as he looks for answers. Since he's in the middle of a mystery, McAvoy will not be given a script or dialogue, just basic aspects of the story, while the rest of the cast and crew will know exactly what is going on. It's the same tactic Carion employed with his first stab at the story.

STX Films is backing the film, which should be shooting next month in Scotland. "We’re thrilled to be working with Christian to create My Son for worldwide audiences," says STX's chairman, Adam Fogelson. "James will be doing the detective work of the film in real time, on camera, to create real tension for this thriller. We like to support bold and innovative storytelling like My Son, and Claire could not be a more spectacular or exciting choice for this film which is certain to thrill audiences."
