Stephen King is enjoying yet another surge in adaptations of his work, but his son, Joe Hill, is no slouch when it comes to studios and TV companies optioning his writing. You can imagine, then, that a novella written by them both has been a hot property, with Netflix nabbing the chance to make it, and James Marsden making a deal to star in In The Tall Grass.
Splice director Vincenzo Natali is adapting the book, and will call the shots this summer in Toronto. The story follows Cal and Becky, siblings who are on a cross-country drive. When they hear a child calling out for help, they stop the car in a church parking lot and realise the boy’s cries are coming from a field across the road. Cal and a pregnant Becky trudge through the tall grass in hopes of rescuing the boy, but... Well, you can probably guess that horror ensues from there.
This is the third King adaptation going into production at Netflix, following Gerald's Game and 1922. As for Marsden, he can be found as the ill-fated Teddy on Westworld, which recently returned for its second season.
