Here’s one to chalk up to pure speculation: there’s reason to believe that James Mangold might be involved in DC’s upcoming film adaptation of Swamp Thing. The reveal of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios slate – laying out the first ‘Gods And Monsters’ phase that will aim to shape up the continuity of the DCU once and for all – included a variety of intriguing projects, from a fresh take on Superman, to a brand new Batman, and plenty more besides. And capping it all off was a film version of Swamp Thing – the cult comic book monster whose tragic story has been at the heart of some of the most beloved DC stories.
Now, Gunn’s announcements didn’t come with any indication of filmmakers that might be involved in the slew of projects – but today, none other than James Mangold (of Logan, Ford V Ferrari, and a certain upcoming film by the name of Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny) posted on his Twitter feed a panel from a Swamp Thing comic. If it’s a coincidence, it’s a mightily big one.
Is he going to be part of Gunn’s planned Swamp Thing movie? Is he merely a fan of the comics sharing his excitement at the prospect of a big-screen version? Could it be any other kind of swamp-related situation currently unfolding in Mangold’s life? There’s little to go off yet, but the prospect of the man behind Logan doing the big green gooey guy justice on screen at DC Studios is definitely something to be excited about. Stay vigilant, people.
