Following his sacking by Disney from further work on the MCU with Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 after offensive joke tweets were dug up, James Gunn was hired by Warner Bros. to write the script for the second Suicide Squad movie it had in development. We figured it would probably end up with him directing it, and so it has come to pass.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, he's now officially in negotiations to make the movie, currently called The Suicide Squad and seen more as a refresh than a straight sequel to the 2016 film. You've got to figure that Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn will show up again (unless she's too busy with her own spin-off movies), but no details have leaked out yet. We can, however, expect Gunn's trademark blend of comic book laughs and action.

Warners has announced that the film will be a key part of its 2021 slate, landing an August slot following the animated DC Super Pets in May and Matt Reeves' live-action The Batman in June. The latter will see someone new inheriting the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman with Ben Affleck indicating he won't be back. And Reeves recently talked up his angle for the film.

While we're sorry to see the last hope that Gunn might be welcomed back into the MCU fold, we're intrigued to see what he does with one of DC's more controversial's properties, which was met with negative reviews but still scored at the box office.
