What’s that, up in the calendar? Is it a bank holiday? Is it a birthday you really shouldn’t have forgotten? No, it’s Superman Anniversary day! There might not be any official method of celebrating the most famous Kryptonian hero, but today marks 85 years since the first issue of Action Comics hit the shelves, featuring the blue caped hero and his striking outside pants – and James Gunn has offered us a little update on Superman: Legacy for the occasion.

When Gunn unveiled his DC Universe plans last year, one he revealed that he was writing an all-new Superman screenplay, presenting (another) fresh take on the legendary comic book character. More recently, he confirmed that he would also be taking the reins on that film, titled Superman: Legacy, as director. And now, before Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 has even hit the big screen, he’s offered an update on his next movie – he’s already underway on pre-production, with the wheels moving on various aspects of the film.

As Gunn’s Tweet states, the production design and costume departments are already busy beavering away on what Superman: Legacy will look like – and if you wanted an early idea of what that might be, take a look at Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s 2005 run All-Star Superman. Gunn has named that comic as an influence on his film, and an image of Superman looking down on Metropolis in his signature colourful get-up has been used in relation to the movie ever since its unveiling.

Good news for Supes fans, then. But – awkward! – we forgot to get the old guy a cake. If only we could speed down to M&S and pick one up in the time it takes to blink.
