Here’s a collaboration that can definitely be labelled unexpected: David Gordon Green, best known for intimate, small-town life-centric indie dramas, is taking on a buddy druggie comedy starring The 40-Year-Old Virgin’s Seth Rogen and Spider-Man’s James Franco.

The Pineapple Express will find a pair of stoner friends mixed up with a drug gang. "This project is an opportunity to plant an absurd buddy comedy in a rough-and-tumble action movie," Green told Variety. "I've always been a sucker for the genre and hungry to fire up a comedy where characters don't get lost in their own concept."

It should be a quality comedy – Judd Apatow, for whom both Rogen and Franco have worked for before – is producing. Green will start shooting early next year, based on a screenplay by Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
