With Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson already aboard, it might have seemed as though new sci-fi thriller Life had filled its star quotient. But no! Now the film has Jake Gyllenhaal taking over one of the lead roles.

He's actually been added because Reynolds has a schedule clash with Hitman's Bodyguard and won't have the time to tackle the main character. But instead of pushing the eject button completely, the Deadpool star has shifted to one of the supporting roles, with Gyllenhaal taking his place.

The plot, written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, sees astronauts on the International Space Station receiving a sample from Mars, discovering that it has signs of life and then fearing for their own lives and the future of Earth when it turns out to be more intelligent than anyone could have guessed. After all, the chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one. And still...

Daniel Espinosa is in the director's chair for this one, which doesn't yet have a start date or release schedule planned. Gyllenhaal will next be seen in Demolition, which arrives here on April 29.
