It’s not exactly news that Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg agreed to take on one entry each in their planned Tintin trilogy. But now the two filmmakers have finally given some official confirmation that Jackson will get to work on the second film once they receive the go-ahead from their studio backers.

“Sony and Paramount were willing to do one movie with us and then give us the financial wherewithal to develop a script, do all the visual storyboards and get it really in launch position. So we can launch pretty quickly on a second movie. The script is already written,” Spielberg explained to the Hollywood Reporter (via The Playlist).

The script, or at least one of the drafts, comes from author Anthony Horowitz, who was hired last year to develop a story based on an amalgam of two adventures: Prisoners Of The Sun and The Seven Crystal Balls. The finished product will likely be called The Adventures Of Tintin: Prisoners Of The Sun and find the boy reporter and Captain Haddock investigating the spread of a mysterious illness that befalls explorers who dared to violate a scared Incan tomb.

Of course, we’ll have to wait once more – Jackson is a little busy right bringing the two Hobbit adventures to life. But with the positive buzz the first Tintin is already getting, it could well end up a big success at the box office, which would in turn trigger the necessary approval for him to work on the sequel when he’s finally ready. And who knows? Maybe someone else could step in for the second movie and Jackson could switch to the third. Either way, the good news is that we're pretty much certain to see Professor Calculus in the next outing, and that can only be a good thing.
