Even as productions are only starting to consider getting back into gear, Sony is making moves to expand its Spider-Man cinematic universe behind the scenes and at script level. Following yesterday's news of director SJ Clarkson boarding a mysterious new film for the studio (possibly Madame Web) comes word that Marc Guggenheim will adapt Jackpot for the screen.

Not perhaps a household name outside of comics circles, the original incarnation of the character, scientist Sara Ehret was created by Dan Slott and Phil Jimenez in 2007. Ehret is a Parkinson's researcher who, while pregnant, is exposed to Lot 777, a virus that leaves her in a coma. When she emerges, she gives birth safely and also displays super strength. She ends up as a government-sanctioned superhero in New York, though gave up her mission to keep her family safe. Alana Jacobson took over the Jackpot role, but dies in action helping Spidey. Sara Ehret then takes the identity back, feeling the guilt of Alana's death.

Whether Guggenheim's script will cover all that remains to be seen, but it's clear Sony wants more female superheroes in its lineup. Guggenheim has comic book writing experience and, while he might choose to forget he was one of the writers on 2011's Green Lantern, he's since seen more success as one of the chief writer/producers for the Arrowverse TV series.
