This weekend it was clear to see what America wanted to watch: Johnny Knoxville being attacked by a bull and the rest of the Jackass team throwing themselves into danger in equally insane ways. Jackass Number Two plopped into the charts at the top position, the boys running away with $28.1 million, which is 23% more than the first movie’s opening and the strongest start of the month.
Meanwhile, Jet Li was also in town with a few stunts, albeit of the more movie normal martial arts action type. Fearless, sold in all the ads as Li’s final kung fu flick, took in $10.5 million, a solid second placing. In third, Dwayne Johnson (that’s Mr The Rock to you) held a strong game with Gridiron Gang, the American football movie dropping just 33% for $9.7 million in its second week.
Much less successful was the launch for MGM’s World War One pic Flyboys, with James Franco and co landing rather badly in fourth with just $6 million. With an estimated $60 million budget to repay, things aren’t looking good.
Meanwhile, the Fox ‘toon Everyone’s Hero hung on to a decent chunk of its money, landing in fifth its second week. The movie made $4.7 million this week, though that does mean Hero has only taken $11.6 million so far – hardly Ice Age 2-type numbers. That still puts it in a better position than The Black Dahlia – as Brian De Palma’s noir thriller took a dive, landing four places down the list at sixth and only scraped up $4.4 million. With $17.2 million in the bank so far, this is going to have a tough job making its cash back.
The week’s truly big flop was Steven Zaillian’s troubled All The King's Men. Even with the likes of Sean Penn, Jude Law, and Anthony Hopkins starring, the re-editing and release delays have seriously hurt it, and the film took just $3.8 million for a poor seventh place.
And so to the bottom, where it’s a story of one thriller and those two beloved indie darlings. The Covenant managed $3.3 million this weekend (only a 31% drop), for a current total of $20.3 million – effectively making its budget back while still in cinemas. Renny Harlin will be smiling – but hopefully making a better movie next time. Finally, we have The Illusionist and Little Miss Sunshine bringing up the rear, both of them finally starting to wind down. Unless they get a second wind, of course…
