The first was by John McTiernan, then there were two by Philip Noyce, and later on, another by Phil Alden Robinson. And according to Deadline, Jack Ryan**'s next adventure is likely to be directed by Lost veteran Jack Bender. Chris Pine is already set to star.
Bender does have films on his CV - he made Child's Play 3 and something called Lone Justice 2 - but he's been more prolific and high-profile on the small screen. He was executive producer and director of around forty episodes (including the finale) of the aforementioned island-based weirdness, and he helmed four episodes of the Sopranos, eleven of Alias, two of Carnivale and two of Ally McBeal.
That's a lot of genre boxes ticked, with The Sopranos and Alias alone indicating that he's got the knack for drama and action that a Jack Ryan movie requires. That, along with the general career-hotness of anyone involved with Lost (see also Damon Lindelof) is presumably what's put him at the top of Paramount's shortlist for the sought-after gig. Nothing's quite signed yet though, so Bender will still need a good interview suit.
Tentatively titled Moscow, the film will star Pine, and is set in the days before Jack Ryan became the CIA Action Dad that we know and love. The script, based on none of the Tom Clancy novels, is by Adam Cozad, and shooting is due to start in February.
