For those who – despite director Ed Zwick locking in a shooting schedule – still have trouble believing that **Jack Reacher 2 **is actually happening, Paramount has now set a date for the film’s release, at least in the US. It’ll hit American cinemas on October 21, 2016.

If the new Reacher keeps to the release plan of the original, UK audiences should see it a few days after it launches in the States. Zwick is on board to co-write and direct this one, taking over duties from Christopher McQuarrie, who kicked things off back in 2012.

The script, which Zwick and regular collaborator Marshall Herskovitz have worked on after earlier drafts from Richard Wenk, still appears to be based on Lee Child’s 2013 tome Never Go Back, his eighteenth Reacher novel. That plot would see Reacher heading back to his old military base in Virginia, to be charged with a violent incident and faced with a paternity case, neither of which transgression he remembers.

So far, not much else has been revealed about the film, aside from the obvious Tom Cruise-shaped component, who will be back beating stunt men up on set come November. Following that, it appears the plan is still for him to segue into work on the nascent Mission: Impossible 6, with Paramount hoping for that one to see the inside of cinemas in 2017.
