Given the reaction to the first film adapted from Stephen King's It, it was a fair be that the sequel would launch at the top of the Stateside box office. And while It: Chapter Two didn't quite hit the heights of its progenitor, it still arrived with a healthy $91 million in the top spot.
And thanks to solid returns from overseas markets (including here in the UK), the horror sequel has taken in more than $185 million worldwide. It'll have to go some to match up to the original film's $700 million plus gross, but it's a strong start.
Other studios were scared away from trying to challenge Pennywise and co., so for the most part, it was a case of the top 10 shuffling down one spot. Angel Has Fallen was knocked from the top spot, adding $6 million, while comedy Good Boys slipped to third on $5.3 million. In fourth, The Lion King earned $4.1 million, while Overcomer actually jumped up a spot, taking home $3.75 million.
That meant Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw was pushed to sixth, making $3.72 million, and indie comedy drama The Peanut Butter Falcon expanded its release and leapt into the top 10 with $2.276 million at seventh. Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark earned $2.275 for eighth, with Ready Or Not in ninth and $2.2 million. Finally, Dora And The Lost City Of Gold crept back into the top 10, grabbing $2.1 million along the way.
