Just when you thought the Flash film was finished throwing twists and curveballs — who are we kidding? It may never be finished — comes another development. Andy Muschietti, who has found success with horror adaptation It and has the sequel on track to arrive this year, is now in talks to take over the troubled superhero project.
The plan to make a stand-alone film starring Ezra Miller's Barry Allen must've seemed a no-brainer at one point, given how much entertainment value he added to Justice League. But ever since the movie was announced, it has been plagued by director and writer changes. Most recently, Game Night's John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein officially boarded to write and direct a more comedically-focused take on the tale, which would seem to play well with the relatively more light-hearted nature of the Flash. Miller, however, saw things differently, preferring to produce his own screenplayalongside comics veteran Grant Morrison that skewed towards his darker ideas.
Since then, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has decided to reject Miller's script, but he's staying on – at least for now – as the star. Daley and Goldstein quietly left the movie of their own volition and now Muschietti's is in talks to take over. None of the previous scripts are reportedly to be used, either, as the studio has Christina Hodson, who wrote Birds Of Prey, is on to work on a fresh draft.
If all goes well, the studio is hoping that Muschietti will be preparing to make the film early next year, with his sister/producing partner Barbara also stepping on to produce. Can it arrive before 2022, or the heat death of the universe? Maybe Barry Allen can run back in time to tell us. Run, Barry, run!
