They might be more known for caustic novel writing styles that have fuelled film adaptations, but Trainspotting's Irvine Welsh and American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis are teaming up to create a new drama series called American Tabloid.

That's the working title, at least, but we do know it will follow one weekly American tabloid publication over several decades, a place where morals and ethics are something that interest other people. UK production company Burning Wheel is backing the show, which doesn't yet have a broadcast or streaming home.

"To do this production justice we always knew we would require writers who don’t hold back and go way further than most would dare," says Shelley Hammond of Burning Wheel. "We are just beyond delighted that we are ready to agree a deal to make this happen with the incredible talent of Bret and Irvine. This would be the first time the two have collaborated professionally – and with the support to allow creative freedom we are confident spectacular things will happen."
