A new film by Martin Scorsese is always an event – especially when he’s revisiting the crime movie genre that he has defined and repeatedly re-defined, and assembling a jaw-dropping cast headlined by Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Al Pacino. His latest, The Irishman, is a sweeping epic that views the history of 20th century America through the story of Frank ‘The Irishman’ Sheeran (De Niro), a mob hitman recalling his involvement with the Bufalino crime family.
The new issue of Empire, on sale Thursday 5 September, offers a major world exclusive look inside The Irishman and its long journey to the screen, with the cast and director’s very first interviews anywhere about the film, plus a stack of never-before-seen images. You can pre-order a copy online here with free UK P&P – and to keep you going in the run-up to the magazine hitting the shelves, here are three brand new pictures.
First up, here’s De Niro’s Sheeran, Pacino’s Jimmy Hoffa, Ray Romano’s Bill Bufalino, Jesse Plemons’s Chuckie O’Brien and more reacting to a news report of JFK’s assassination.
Secondly, here’s an aged-up De Niro playing an 80-year-old Sheeran, talking to a priest played by Father Jonathan Morris.
And finally, here’s Stephen Graham as volatile mobster Anthony ‘Tony Pro’ Provenzano.
There’s plenty more where that came from in the upcoming October issue of Empire – the only place you can find the full story of 2019’s most anticipated film – available on 5 September. Pre-order your copy online here, and stay tuned for more exclusive Irishman coverage soon.
The Irishman comes to Netflix on 27 November, preceded by a run in select UK cinemas from 8 November.
