Given the sheer number of films appearing on the Independent Spirit Awards ballot that don't also feature on the list of Oscar nominees, the results don't have an impact on who might be taking home trophies Sunday night. But the event did represent justice for movies such as Uncut Gems, The Farewell and Booksmart.

Lulu Wang's story of a Chinese family hiding the truth of their grandmother's condition from her, The Farewell took home both Best Feature and Best Supporting Female for Zhao Shuzhen, who plays the grandma.

As for Uncut Gems, directors Benny and Josh Safdie won their category, while star Adam Sandler nabbed Best Male Lead, and the film scored Best Editing. Olivia Wilde's Booksmart saw some love in the shape of the Best First Feature award, while See You Yesterday was named Best First Screenplay.

There was some crossover with the Academy Awards, as Judy's Renée Zellweger won another gong (Best Female Lead), while Marriage Story got Best Screenplay and the Robert Altman Award. The Lighthouse went home with Best Cinematography and Willem Dafoe landed Best Supporting Male. Parasite also managed to pop up at the ceremony, taking International Feature.
