We all knew that Disney was planning for more Indiana Jones films, and Steven Spielberg is already developing a fifth with Harrison Ford back in the hat. Now, though, Bob Iger, talking on a number of topics with The Hollywood Reporter, reveals that the future still includes the potentially sacrilegious "r"-word... Reboot.
Though Iger dismisses talk of a Star Wars-style universe for Indy movies, he does drop mention of future plans, which are obviously at a very early stage. "Right now, we're focused on a reboot, or a continuum and then a reboot of some sort. We'll bring him back, then we have to figure out what comes next. That's what I mean. It's not really a reboot, it's a boot – a reboot. I don't know." We know, we know... that sort of statement can best be described as "clear as mud", but you had to figure the company would want to keep going.
As for what form that future will take? You'd probably need to be Nostradamus to know at this point. "I've had discussions about what the direction is, but I don't want to get into it," says Iger. "I see making more. It won't be just a one-off."
So Ford will be hanging up at the hat at some point, but then someone else will be doing the adventuring. We'd figure a different character – not someone playing Indy himself – but for now the original flavour should be back in 2019.
