More talk of a follow-up… Or two?

Independence Day Sequel Rumours Return

It has been 14 years since Independence Day hit our screens, and since then rumours have surfaced every few years about a sequel to the film.

Roland Emmerich in particular has stoked the embers himself more than once in that time, and today brings yet another possibility to add to the list: two speculative sequels, with Will Smith said to be attached to both.

The fine folk at IESB are reporting that Fox, flush with money thanks to Avatar, is seriously considering the idea, even if both Emmerich and Dean Devlin haven’t finally decided if they want to proceed with any story ideas they’ve cooked up. And Smith is a big financial issue, which might explain why nothing has happened yet.

Even if the money issues can be hammered out, there’s still the matter of scheduling. Smith is weighing options for his next movie and Emmerich is gearing up his Shakespeare thriller Anonymous. The earliest everyone could be available is probably 2011.

Time will tell if this moves from the rumour file to reality…
