“Looooofahhhhhhh!” It’s impossible to spread any news about Idris Elba’s no-rules copper without yelling his name first. So, with that out of the way, the news is that John Luther’s long-awaited return in Luther: The Fallen Sun – the tortured detective’s first film – is almost upon us, and with his big-screen debut a matter of weeks away Netflix has finally released a full trailer. This feature-length outing finds Elba’s rogue hero on the run, on the brink, and hunting a killer unlike any other he’s faced before. All in a day’s work, eh? Check it out below:
The Fallen Sun is a direct continuation of the TV show, which finished in 2019 after five series, and is helmed by series regular director Jamie Payne and Luther writer-creator Neil Cross. The film – a BBC and Netflix co-production – will see Elba’s brilliant but disgraced detective Luther stuck behind bars as a terrifying killer, Andy Serkis’ psychopathic tech billionaire David Robey, terrorises London. As we see in the trailer though, bars can only hold John Luther back for so long, and following an explosive prison break the red-tied renegade sets out to hunt down a serial killer as he himself is hunted by his own former colleagues, spearheaded by Dermot Crowley’s DSU Martin Schenk and newcomer Cynthia Erivo.
The film is set for a limited theatrical release on 24 February, ahead of a worldwide Netflix release on 10 March. In the meantime, you can hear our interview with director Jamie Payne and star Andy Serkis about the film from our recent live 550th episode of the Empire Podcast, available right now on all good and evil audio streaming platforms. Go on, then – one more time: “LOOFAHHHH!”
