Good news for the world, bad news for the Empire office. Sir Ian McKellen, Grail expert, master of magnetism and wizard extraordinaire, has signed on to use those sonorous tones to narrate Stardust, Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of Neil Gaiman's fantasy novel.

The film stars newcomer Charlie Cox as Tristran, a young man who goes on a quest to find a fallen star in order to win the hand of the woman he loves. Along the way he meets witches, monsters, Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert de Niro and Ricky Gervais.

McKellen will be recording his role soon, as the film is now in post-production and gearing up for its July 27th release in the States. Sadly, we'll have to wait until October 19th. And why is this bad news for the Empire office? Well, while we're rather looking forward to the sound of those cultured tones taking us through the film, we suspect that there's going to be no stopping Chris' Sir Ian impression after this. In fact, it's a toss-up whether he'll ever speak in a normal voice again.
