Reservations over how Ang Lee's adaptation of The Hulk would be received by audiences were annihilated this weekend as the gamma-irradiated monster opened to a shirt-ripping $62.6 million. Displacing Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me from this particular pedestal, The Hulk set a new record as the biggest June opener in history. Another victory for Marvel, this proves without a doubt that comic adaptations can simply do no wrong at the moment. The public's appetite for lycra-clad heroes, musclebound mutants and vigilante sociopaths gives no sign of abating with Ang Lee's film following the gold-paved path travelled by the likes of X-Men 2, Daredevil and Spider-Man. And you thought all those beardy weirdoes with Babylon 5 t-shirts who spent their time in Forbidden Planet cruising for limited edition Fantastic Four issues were sad, didn't you? They're the future we tell you. The future!
