You might have expected Hugh Laurie to be finished with series TV after eight years playing Dr. Gregory House, but he’s ready to get back to the small screen. Laurie has signed up to star in a new drama called Chance.

Based on Kem Nunn’s book, the show will see Laurie as Eldon Chance, who works in San Francisco as a forensic neuropsychiatrist. After an ill-advised encounter with an alluring patient, his life is thrown into turmoil when he’s targeted by her abusive husband, who also happens to be a ruthless police detective. Forced to dip into the dark underbelly of the city, he also has to deal with a difficult divorce and his teenage daughter’s turbulent behaviour. Soon, he’s exploring the deeper frontiers of the human mind, apparently. But will it be lupus? It’s never lupus.

This one comes with the backing of Frank director Lenny Abrahamson, who is in the middle of awards talk for his new film Room, and who will serve as executive producer and director for several episodes of the two-season order. US streaming service Hulu has ordered the show from Fox 21 Studios.

Laurie will next show up as a wrong ‘un in The Night Manager, the miniseries based on John le Carre’s book that will hit UK screens on February.
